Meet JTC Degree Guitar Instructor – Jon Bishop

Jon is a top session player and a first-class music educator.

Jon, has recorded a short series of instructional videos for current, and prospective students. In this series he discusses methods for recording and editing assessments and weekly tasks, from the very basic methods through to creating an advanced set-up. Jon has just finished touring with rock’n’roll legend, Shakin’ Stevens, recently performing on Later with Jools Holland, This Morning and Pointless! He is a regular guitar magazine contributor & has completed several features for Guitar Techniques Magazine, including Texas Blues and the Mixolydian mode as well as a video lesson with blues rock legend, Robin Trower. Jon will be touring a live soundtrack screening of the the international smash hit La La Land throughout September.

How did you first get into music?
My dad was a guitar and keyboard player in bands in the 1960s. Music and musical instruments were around the home from my earliest memory.

What was the first record you ever bought?
Duran Duran, Rio. I still have it on 7” vinyl.

Who is, or was your greatest musical influence?
Listening to Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton records is what made me want to play guitar.

Best experience in music – (recording or live etc?)
Opening on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury in 2009.

What is your favourite piece of gear and why?
My James Tyler Studio Elite guitar is my favorite. It was custom made for me by one of the finest electric guitar makers out there.

What’s your top tip for being a great musician?
I think listening and playing for the song are up near the top of the list.

What would be your ultimate fantasy band line-up?
It would have been interesting to hear what would have happened if Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis had teamed up.
