Student Story: Pranayam Aquino – Student Representative, Drums

We recently chatted to our newest Student Representative, drummer, Pranayam Aquino. Read on to find out more about his influences, career goals and why he volunteered to be the Student Representative!

Welcome, Pranayam! Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hi, my name is Pranayam and I am a drummer from Manila. I currently live in Shanghai, China and I am enrolled in the BA (Hons) Creative Music Performance (Drums). I started the course in January 2018.

What is your musical background?
I started playing the drums when I was a teenager. I played in a band with my Dad and we gigged around Manila.  We played mostly Rock and Alternative. We also had a lighting and sound equipment company and rented it out to bands in Manila. I moved to Shanghai 14 years ago and have been a freelance drummer since moving here.  I now play all styles of music like Pop, Jazz, Latin, Funk, R&B, Fusion and Ska.

What are your short and long-term academic and career goals?
I hope to complete this degree in the next 3 and a half years, which will hopefully open up more work opportunity as a teacher and performer. I would really like to use this degree to help me become an ambassador for a drum and cymbal company.

Who were some of your musical influences?
The first musician that inspired me was my dad. He was the one who showed me how to play the drum kit and at that point, I started to think hitting a drum was fun!  Also my grandad showed me how to play a guitar which got me interested in playing this instrument.  My sister showed me a video of Chick Corea and Dave Weckl and that’s when I started thinking I wanted to play drums more seriously.

What music are you currently listening to?
Music that I’m listening to at the moment is mostly traditional Latin Music, Latin Jazz and Fusion. I recently started to play with the local Latino Jazz Band and have had a lot of new songs to learn. I am also listening to Louie Palmer at the moment. I have found his style to be similar to Dave Weckl who I regularly listen to. I am really interested in the sound that Dave Weckl makes. I am always looking for ways to make my sound better and I find him most inspiring.

Why did you volunteer to be the Student Representative?
I volunteered to be a Student Rep because I want to share my knowledge and help students who are signing up to DIME ONLINE. I am a patient and understanding person who enjoys being positive and making sure that we do not lose sight of why we are doing music – because we love it!
