Student Story: Welcome Budimir Štivičić – Drums

In the second of our interviews with students who are new to DIME ONLINE, we sat down with Budimir Štivičić who is studying on the BA (Hons) Creative Music Performance, specialising in Drums. We found out more about his influences, his goals, and why he’s attracted to online learning. Budimir originally hails from Croatia but now lives, studies and works in Ireland!

What is your musical background?

I’ve studied music, musicology, jazz performance and arranging before this course. I already have a BA (Hons) in Humanities with Music degree from the Open University, and I’ve played drums for about 20 years now.

Why did you decide to apply for an online music degree?

It allows me to combine my studies with everyday responsibilities and a full-time job.

What are your short and long-term academic and career goals?

In the short term, I want to acquire further skills in the drums and finish the degree. Longer term, my goal is to develop specialised instrumental skill by undertaking research in ethnic styles of specific European regions and present these in a form of a book and drum clinics/seminars. I also want to continue my education by taking a Masters-level course in Music.

Who were some of your musical influences?

I’ve been influenced by many drummers and composers, anything from rock and metal to jazz and classical.  Nicko McBrain, Mike Portnoy, Alex Van Halen, Sean Reinert, Uli Kusch, Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Roy Haynes, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, and Chick Corea.

What music are you currently listening to?

All good music! From cheesy 80 hair metal to contemporary jazz.

Where can we hear more of your music?
