DIME ONLINE Guitar Degree graduate Stephen Fisher is based in Kenya and has recently been doing some inspiring work with Ghetto Classics, which is a community music program in Korogocho, one of the most poverty stricken slums in East Africa. Korogocho backs onto Nairobi's landfill site, and many of the children at Ghetto Classics scrape a living working on the dump.
The children use donated instruments and even have their own orchestra.
Stephen said, "It was such an inspiring day. I taught the kids some different progressions, they taught me some different soukous, rhumba and other african styles."
Stephen is planning on heading back regularly to teach and jam. He's also looking to raise some money to bring some basic electric guitars and rock music equipment in for these children to use. They are mainly using old and worn down spanish guitars. The main focus at Ghetto Classics is classical music so Stephen is hoping to raise the profile of rock, jazz and pop in Nairobi.
