A deft powerhouse behind the kit and a legend on the international drumming scene – this months’s team member is Gabor Dornyei – Drum Module Leader & Contributor
What is your role with DIME & DIME ONLINE?
I’ve written the Technical Development and the Improvisation Drum Course materials both for DIME and DIME ONLINE as well as teaching on the degree course.
Who were some of your influences as you progressed as a musician?
My biggest favourites are: Billy Cobham, Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio, Trilok Gurtu and many other greats. Amongst brilliant jazz drummers, as Peter Erskine and Jack DeJohnette other instrumentalists also made big impact on my playing and me as a musician, some of these names were Michael Brecker, Chick Corea, The Yellowjackets, Miles Davis, Keith Jarret or Giovanni Hidalgo, to name but a few.
How did you establish yourself as a teacher?
Since I was seventeen – 20 years ago – people approached me with their private lesson requests. I’ve always enjoyed watching my students grow and improve as they followed my concepts and methods and because I think I have a natural feel to get on with everybody easily on a personal, friendly level. Over time, drum education has become one of the biggest passions of mine. It was a great pleasure when I’ve become a member of the Vic Firth Education Team in Boston, USA.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Billy Cobham – Spectrum
Best experience in music?
Probably one of my favourite tour was the three years long World Tour with the London production of the Michael Jackson Show – Thriller Live, but I’ve also enjoyed our sold out clinics and masterclass tours with my original Drums & Percussion project Thunder Duo, or our recent DVD recording with the multi award winner world-class percussionist, Pete Lockett. My studio recordings with an eighty-piece classical orchestra for Walt Disney, our signing to Hudson Music in New York, my DrumChannel solo recordings in LA and also my recent feature in the World’s No1 American Modern Drummer Magazine were remarkable milestones of my career…and hopefully the best part is yet to come!
What gear and equipment are you using?
I feel extremely fortunate to be worldwide endorser of Pearl Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Remo DrumHeads, Vic Firth Sticks, Tycoon Percussion, Roland V-Drums, Hardcase and Kickport.
What’s your top tip for being a professional musician in the modern age?
The most important thing is to learn ALL styles of music, showing your face, being on the scene, and producing good quality recordings that you can use as a reference and showcase of your talent.
